Skin Resurfacing

For a teenager, the problems surrounding them are many and sometimes their importance is overwhelming.  Taking care of their skin is probably one that ranks very high in their list of importance. There is no surprise then that the sales of therapeutic cosmetics and skincare products is estimated to be a market size in excess of $50 billion worlwide.

There are teens with severe acne marks and scaring that skincare products don’t help.  After spending hundreds of dollars in skincare products that don’t help, they want a real solution to their problems .  Their self image is suffering and their fitting in at school is not easy. They are troubled and oftentimes their social life suffers because of their self image. What are the solutions then?

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Laser resurfacing  improves cosmetic flaws, such as wrinkles, acne scars and aging and sun-damage skin.  It is the latest scientific breakthrough in skin rejuvenation.

You may be asking what exactly is skin resurfacing.  Laser resurfacing is the most recent scientific breakthrough in skin rejuvenation. The short definition you can find is that  laser resurfacing is a technique used during laser surgery wherein the molecular bonds are dissolved by laser.

Before you decide in a type of procedure for your teenager, research the procedure, places and doctors where you are planning on having it done. Credentials from the plastic surgeon you are choosing are to be thoroughly checked before the first consultation.  Be informed, Be safe.

Teens and Cosmetic Surgery

I recently read an article about teens getting cosmetic surgery as a graduation gift.  It also discussed the philosophy of teens having surgery.  Before your decide whether your teen should consider cosmetic surgery, research together the options and whether cosmetic surgery is actually an option for your teen.  Is there an underlying issue that is not being considered,  or an issue of low selfsteem?  Is your teen having difficulty fitting in and  cosmetic surgery is the solution?

According to the  American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) there are different  reasons teens give for having plastic surgery and the reasons adults do: Teens view plastic surgery as a way to fit in and look acceptable to friends and peers. Adults, on the other hand, frequently see plastic surgery as a way to stand out from the crowd.

Although some cosmetic surgery is often times necessary, teen cosmetic surgery and breast implants should be taken seriously  and considered only when the patient is  fully informed of the risks involved with the procedure.

I agree with the point made in the article that this type of surgery should not be linked to any graduation and that the student be rewarded in ways that relate to their intelligence, achievement, etc.  I also agree that young people should be evaluated carefully about their reasons for wanting surgery.
